Semiconductor International Article: "A Feast for Vultures"

On July 18, 2009, Mr. Alex Braun published an online Semiconductor International article which editorialized his feelings with regards the sale of equipment from the closing of Qimonda's Dresden and Richmond 300-mm facilities. In summary, he did not feel it was appropriate for SEMI to lease booth space to a company by the name of Emerald Technology Valuations at SEMICON West 2009 for the purpose of advertising Qimonda's secondhand equipment as being for sale. The full article can be reviewed and commented on at:

Several years ago, I (Gary Alexander: AMC Intl. LLC) wrote a series of monthly articles on the secondary market for Semiconductor International. Many of them are still available under the Articles and Publications section of this website. During that time, I came to know Mr. Braun and found him to be a very personable, knowledgeable and articulate person. I am not familiar with the Emerald Technology Valuation company nor were they ever members of SEC/N. What I do know is that the resale of semiconductor secondhand equipment is a time honored legitimate business that has been a part of SEMICON shows going back over more than fifteen (15) years. During that time, SEMI has leased space to numerous secondhand equipment dealers and supported SEC/N with booth space and seminar co-sponsorships around the world. Why Mr. Braun chose to focus on this particular situation is only known to him.

SEC/N was acquired by SEMI in October of 2008. Since that time, SEMI has established the Secondary Equipment, Services and Technology Group (SESTG)  to carry on and expand the work that SEC/N started. I encourage Mr. Braun to contact and work with the SESTG to help him gain a more objective perspective of the global market for secondhand equipment.

Kim Newman - New Chip Scale Publisher

July, 2009 - Gene Selven has passed the publishing baton for Chip Scale Review to his daughter Kim Newman. Both Gene and Kim have been friends of SEC/N and myself (Gary Alexander, AMC Intl. LLC) for the past ten years. Gene and Kim could usually be found walking the floor at trade shows. They always have to smile and a wave for me when I saw them. While we will miss Gene's editorials and presence, rest assured that he has left the minding of the store in good hands. Good luck Kim in your new position.

Chip Scale Review is "the international magazine for device and water-level test, assembly, and packaging addressing high-density interconnection of microelectronic IC's including 3D packages. MEMS, MOEMS, RF/Wireless, Optoelectronic and other water-fabricated devices for the 21st Century."

SEMICON West 2009 / Intersolar 2009

July 14-16, 2009 - SEMICON WEST 2009 was held again this year in San Francisco at the Moscone Center. The number of exhibitors at the Show was understandably lower this year, primarily due to depressed economic conditions. Some of the major OEM's were conspicuously absent from a booth presence stand point and what social events that were featured conservatism and a significantly downsized list of invitees.

SEMI hosted an open forum at 4 PM on Wednesday (15th) that focused on the secondary market and the new SESTG officers. Gary Alexander (AMC Intl. LLC) was the initial speaker and covered the transition from SEC/N to SEMI. SEMI underestimated the number of persons who wished to attend the forum resulting in a very crowded situation and some persons having to be turned away. The new SESTG officers are:

Chair - Eduard Hoeberichts, SIMAX Global Services

Vice Chair - Tim Tobin, Entrepix, Inc.

Executive Officer - Bruce Kim, SurplusGLOBAL

July 14-16, 2009 - Intersolar 2009 - By way of contrast, the Intersolar Show held in conjunction with SEMICON West, was larger than last year and covered 2 1/2 floors of Moscone Center West. While over 90% of the Intersolar Show focused on PV uses of solar energy, there were other exhibitors that featured project management and solar thermal services.

AMC Intl. LLC's Contract Expires

AMC Intl. LLC's contract with SEMI for consulting and other secondhand equipment market services expired on March 31, 2009. Gary Alexander, the past Executive Director of SEC/N and Managing Principal of AMC Intl. LLC, has been assisting SEMI with seminars and the establishment of SEMI's Secondary Equipment, Services and Technology Group since SEMI acquired SEC/N on October 1, 2008.

As a result, the SEC/N telephone number (480-348-0142), mailing address (P.O. Box 1832, Gilbert, Arizona, 85299, USA) and email addresses (email@secn.org) (galexander@secn.org) are also being discontinued. You are requested to visit the SEMI website (www.semi.org) or contact Mr. Rich Salsman (r.salsman@semi.org / 408-943-6970) at SEMI with regards to future questions that you might have regarding SEMI and their secondary market programs.

SEMI Special Interest Group

On April 30, 2009 SEMI hosted the fourth conference call of their secondhand equipment special interest group (SIG) since acquiring SEC/N in October of 2008. The  name selected for the new SIG is the Secondary Equipment, Services and Technology Group (SESTG)

The conference call agenda included a discussion of nominations for the SESTG's executive committee  and a discussion of event options for SEMICON West. There are no secondary market seminars, presentations or networking events scheduled at this time.

The next SIG conference call will be held in late May. If your company is a SEMI member and interested in participating in this special interest group,  please contact Mr. Rich Salsman at:

Rich Salsman  Telephone: 408-943-6970 or email: rsalsman@semi.org

SEMI Replaces SEC/N Website

Shortly after January 1, 2009 SEMI replaced the SEC/N website with a SEMI website focused on the secondhand equipment special interest group that they are forming. SEC/N would like to thank all of you who contributed and supported the SEC/N website since it went online in 1999.

For more information on the new SEMI website contact Mr. Rich Salsman (rsalsman@ semi.org).

SEMI Acquires SEC/N

SEMI announced on October 1, 2008 that it had acquired SEC/N, the semiconductor industry's international trade association for secondhand equipment and related services. SEMI plans to integrate many of SEC/N's existing programs into corresponding SEMI operations. In addition, SEMI will be establishing a Special Interest Group to provide future secondary market leadership and focus. The transition of programs is to start immediately.

Gary Alexander, SEC/N's Founder and outgoing Executive Director,  will continue to work with SEMI in the interim as a transition agent and consultant, as well as helping to produce secondary market seminars at SEMICON Europa '08, Japan '08, and Korea.'09.
